چکیده

In 1917, Alfred Mayor surveyed a 270 m transect on reef flat American Samoa. Eleven surveys were conducted the from 1917 to 2019. The coral community crest was resilient over century, occasionally being seriously damaged but always recovering rapidly. contrast, originally most dense has been steadily deteriorating throughout century. Resilience of communities in regions high wave energy crests associated with important binding function crustose coralline alga (CCA) Porolithon onkodes . Successful recruits found CCA 94% time, yet living cover correlated negatively as they became alternative winners competition. drilled core surface basalt base 48 below. Communities Aua dominated by scleractinians through Holocene, while cores another 2 km away showed occupied alcyonaceans genus Sinularia , which built massive spiculite 37 Despite periods sea levels rising 9 15 times rate accretion, reefs never drowned. consistency and Utulei Reef during Holocene because shape bay allowed more water motion reef. After 10700 yr building octocorals, coastal construction terminated this spiculite-reef development.

Signaling over Different Time and Distance Scales

Cytosolic Ca 2 1 plays a central role in the regulation of numerous aspects of cellular activity in virtually all cell types. Much of this versatility arises through the diverse mechanisms by which Ca 2 1 signals are generated and transmitted to act over very different time and distance scales. For example, Ca 2 1 can act in a very fast and highly localized manner, as in the triggering of neuro...

Climate on Geological Time Scales

JULY 2003, GSA TODAY ABSTRACT Atmospheric levels of CO2 are commonly assumed to be a main driver of global climate. Independent empirical evidence suggests that the galactic cosmic ray flux (CRF) is linked to climate variability. Both drivers are presently discussed in the context of daily to millennial variations, although they should also operate over geological time scales. Here we analyze t...

Marine Dispersal Scales Are Congruent over Evolutionary and Ecological Time

The degree to which offspring remain near their parents or disperse widely is critical for understanding population dynamics, evolution, and biogeography, and for designing conservation actions. In the ocean, most estimates suggesting short-distance dispersal are based on direct ecological observations of dispersing individuals, while indirect evolutionary estimates often suggest substantially ...

Water Quality and Herbivory Interactively Drive Coral-Reef Recovery Patterns in American Samoa

BACKGROUND Compared with a wealth of information regarding coral-reef recovery patterns following major disturbances, less insight exists to explain the cause(s) of spatial variation in the recovery process. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS This study quantifies the influence of herbivory and water quality upon coral reef assemblages through space and time in Tutuila, American Samoa, a Pacific ...

Modelling the ecological-functional diversification of marine Metazoa on geological time scales.

The ecological traits and functional capabilities of marine animals have changed significantly since their origin in the late Precambrian. These changes can be analysed quantitatively using multi-dimensional parameter spaces in which the ecological lifestyles of species are represented by particular combinations of parameter values. Here, we present models that describe the filling of this mult...
